Automotive manufacturers are adding more and more computer-based systems, applications, and connections which is driving up bandwidth requirements. As a result, wiring harness to support these functions in terms of cabling and network interface has constantly increased. Moreover, multiple proprietary standards such as CAN and FlexRay has its own dedicated wiring/communication requirement, leading to the increase in wiring cost, weight, and complexity. Wiring harness is now the third costliest and heaviest component in a car behind engine and chassis. By introducing industry standard Ethernet to the vehicles, all communications from different systems and applications can be simplified and coexist on the same network. VSI’s IEEE802.3 compliant Ethernet physical layer products qualified for automotive applications will help manufacturers save wiring cost and weight, while increasing fuel efficiency.
